Every soccer tournament has a “group of death“, and that title is easily claimed by Group B in the Euro 2012 tournament. All 4 teams have a world FIFA ranking in the top 10:

Let’s start with Denmark, who definitely despise being drawn in this group. They probably would have had a decent shot of making the knockout stages in any other group, but all three of their rivals in this group have them outmatched in every category. Although Denmark qualified at the top of their group for this tournament, we don’t expect them to do much against these other teams.

Germany is a powerhouse, and are considered by many to be tournament favourites. They didn’t lose a game in qualifying. Although many of the squad members suffered a crushing defeat in the Champions League final, they are looking for redemption. This years Germany team is one of the most talented sides ever to show up at a tournament. You definitely can’t claim that this is the same old, boring German-style team. With the likes of Ozil, Muller, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Neuer, Lahm (the list goes on), you can expect the Germans to go deep in the tournament.

The Netherlands are another strong team. They crushed the opposition in the qualifying stage, with the highest goal differential of any team (+29), however they did suffer a loss. The Netherlands finished 2nd to Spain in the World Cup two years ago, and you can argue that the team has gotten more experience since then. Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben are always threats, and Klaas Jan Huntelaar can almost score at will. The Germany – Netherlands matchup in this group will most likely decide the seeding for the knockout stage.

That leaves Portugal. Not only did Portugal have a weak qualifying round, barely even qualifying for the tournament, they have struggled to score goals. However, their defence is still decent. Ronaldo is going to need to step it up for them if they are going to stand any chance. This is an unlucky draw for them, as they would most likely progress to the knockout stages if they weren’t in this group.

Group B Prediction:

  1. Germany (9 pts)
  2. Netherlands (6 pts)
  3. Portugal (3 pts)
  4. Denmark (0 pts)

Germany and Netherlands should progress from this group. As said earlier, the game between these 2 teams will most likely decide the seeding.
